Young killers – Three great examples of teenagers’ brutal instincts

What scares you most in a horror movie?

Some would argue that, horror films featuring eerie and creepy ghosts are quite disturbing and could potentially make the viewers check their closet twice, once the lights are out. Others might suggest that blood-seeking serial killers can offer great moments of chills especially if their story is based on true events. And finally, some would say that clowns are the scariest, most terrifying species to be found in the genre.

What we may sometimes forget is that there are a few brilliant examples of explicit violence and terror that only a group of young teenagers can unleash upon their potential victims. It is justifiable not to consider young teenagers as a part of the deadliest villains in horror movies, but if we take a look into their specific mentalities and the atrocities they perform, they are certainly deadly, horrifying and particularly effective.

Here are three excellent horror movies, that are particularly disturbing in their own way. What makes them special is that the killers are quite young, fearless and super vicious.

1. The Loved Ones (2009)

The Loved Ones is an Australian production depicting how devastating it can be for a young teenage girl to get rejected by the guy of her dreams. Brent (Xavier Samuel), the unlucky dreamy guy, while trying to get over his traumatic past after his father was killed in a car accident, gets caught in a schizophrenic classmate’s web, as she is not willing to go to prom without him. And since he rejected her invitation, Brent will not go to prom either. Instead, he finds himself kidnapped by the insane classmate Lola (Robin McLeavy), and under her equally crazy father’s supervision, she takes all her anger and cruelty on him.

Power drills paint the floor red and scenes of explicit violence and gore set an extremely bloody and macabre setting. Director Sean Byrne certainly aims to show in the most savage way how rough the teen years can be, especially when you are uncontrollably crazy.

2. Eden Lake (2008)

An amazing British production that is Eden Lake, is an amazing horror film showing how awful a romantic getaway can get, when you encounter a group of disturbingly vicious teenagers.

Starring Michael Fassbender, in a role that is not very known,ย Eden Lake is about Jenny and Steve facing the ultimate brutality of a gang of young kids during their camping trip in an idyllic setting by a lake in the woods. At first, the presence of the youths is annoying as they only tease and irritate the couple. But gradually, their behavior becomes more and more violent, as they vandalize the couple’s car and steal their belongings. Soon, Jenny and Steve are left stranded in a deserted area, fighting for their lives, as the gang doesn’t miss any opportunity to show their inner gruesome instincts.

3. Them (2006)

This Romanian production, is certainly a foreign gem depicting the terror and fear that only a bunch of young children can cause to a couple. It all starts when Clementine (Olivia Bonamy), a French teacher, and her husband Lucas (Michaรซl Cohen), start hearing weird noises during the night, and strange things start occurring. At first, the lights go out and the phones lines are disconnected. They feel that someone is in their secluded house with them, but soon they realize that it’s not just one person and certainly not an adult.

What seemed to start as a spooky prank, ends in a night of pure horror, as a group of young children terrorize the couple leading to fatal and bloody consequences.

All three horror movies are amazing examples of how scary and horrifying young killers can be. Apparently, such films are not about the size or the age of the villains. Fear can be equally caused by a bunch of 15-year-olds whose instincts are more brutal than any colorful clown’s or pale ghost’s.

  1. Nice! Very interesting article and I’m very glad that the under-appreciated, terrifying Eden Lake got a mention! There are some intriguing films that take the premise even further with children as well in Children of the Corn and Who Can Kill a Child? Dario Argento in particular is someone with a firm belief that children are inherently evil and he certainly placed hints in his films where he could.

      Thanks so much Jordan! ๐Ÿ™‚

I do believe that children in horror movies are the most terrifying villains; they always do inexplicable things and yet you rarely see them getting killed in the end, just like it happens with almost every bad guy. It seems that it is a taboo to kill children in horror films, however they are perfect for the killer’s role. That’s creepy!

And yes, Eden Lake is an amazing horror film and really terrifying! These kids were just so evil…it was scary!

EDEN LAKE! I remember loving that when I first watched it so many years ago. Fantastic film! Children can be terrifying when utilized correctly! I say correctly because the ones with black eyes from demon movies are not effective anymore! These ones sure are though!

Loved Ones is good eh? I almost watched that recently but chose a film called Babysitter Wanted instead. That was very good as well, but I think I will watch this one soon enough!

I know Eden Lake was so good! And creepy! Those kids were just…arghh..

Loved Ones is very twisted and gory! ๐Ÿ™‚ Great performances but it requires a tough stomach! You might want to give it a try, but there are scenes with nails and hammers and creepy needles! So, keep that in mind! ๐Ÿ˜€

I was going to re-watch Eden Lake last night after I realized Micheal Fassbender was in it. I watched it when I was 15 last, so around the time it came out. Crazy how he went on to starring in X-Man, 12 Years a Slave and so on!

Maria, Maria, you are warning a horror fiend about a little bit of blood. I could eat breakfast while watching that haha:)

Haha! You’re right! Then you should watch it! ๐Ÿ˜‰ I’d lovet to hear what you think! The lead actress is probably one of the most insane killers in horror movies…she is just completely obnoxious
