Sleepy Hollow Series – Review

I believe I am not the only one, who at the thought of ‘Sleepy Hollow‘ instantly thinks of Johnny Depp and his performance as Ichabod Crane, an investigator who tried to solve the mystery of the Headless Horseman. To those of you who don’t quite remember the plot of the original film  released in 1999, I will tell you this. Ichabod Crane travels to a small town called Sleepy Hollow to investigate the murders of civilians caused by a headless horseman, proving that the curse of the headless horseman is real.

Well, in the tv series under the same name “Sleepy Hollow”, there is also a small town that goes by the same name and there is an Ichabod Crane as well. And most importantly there is also a curse by a headless horseman. But the differences truly outnumber the resemblances. The scenery is set in 2013 when the small town of Sleepy Hollow gets shaken by the sudden ressurection of  a soldier of the revolutionary war who was decapitated by a soldier of the opposite forces, under the command of George Washington, Ichabod Crane. His ressurection coincides with the ressurection of Ichabod 250 years after their last and deadly meeting.

The headless horseman is actually Death himself, who escaped from his grave to find his missing head (the head that Ichabod and his witch wife hid hundreds of years ago) so that he can come back to life. What is interestingly (?) different in this series is that this horseman is not alone. He is one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse and they are all under the commands of a goat-like (as always the Devil is) creature.

Now Ichabod, with the help of a young lieutenant, Abbie Mills, has the difficult task to save the world from the upcoming war against the Evil that was ressurected and seeks power.

I don’t know how you feel about all this. I particularly dislike the plot. Following my previous thoughts on recycling the plot of Hannibal Lecter, I feel that this attempt to bring Sleepy Hollow again into fashion, would ruin the original, dark and chilling feeling that Johnny Depp had previously and so successfully created. Combining the curse of the Headless Horseman with the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse and all these brought into the 21st century is just…weird.

Give it a try and watch it. From the very beginning I thought it was a joke. But it might be just me…not!
